Research Programme 4: International Development

Research Programme 1

... how can international development be sustained in a warming world?

Leader: Prof. Katrina Brown (University of East Anglia)
Deputy Leader: Prof. David Thomas (University of Oxford)

The development strategies of poor countries are fundamental to climate change adaptation and mitigation. It is therefore vital to effectively engage these countries into international scientific and policy discussions. The goal of such discussions should be to reduce the contributions of development to global warming and ensure that development itself does not increase the vulnerability of the poor to climate change risks.

Please see the Programme 4 website for more information.

Specific research tasks based at Oxford and under David Thomas's direction are:

4.1 Meta-analysis of climate change vulnerability and adaptation in Africa

There is a wealth of empirical studies, from household to regional scale, of vulnerability and adaptation to environmental change from Africa but to date no systematic continent wide analysis exists. We aim to synthesise data on institutional, economic, social and development linkages in order to provide the first continent-scale assessment of the role of climate parameters and climate change on the effectiveness of development programmes and activities. Find out more about this task on the main Tyndall Centre website...

4.2 Seminar Series and Africa Regional Workshop: Policy frameworks and development interventions for effective mitigation and adaptation to climate change

Programme 4 aims to pro-actively engage with the wealth of development expertise at the University of East Anglia (Development Studies at UEA) and University of Oxford (School of Geography and the Environment - which includes the African Environments Programme and Environmental Change Institute, African Studies, and Development Studies). To achieve this, Task 4.2 will host two seminars and an international workshop in order to link researchers to international climate change and African expertise. These events will contribute to the theoretical debate on mechanisms for appropriate policy frameworks and development interventions for effective mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Find out more about this task on the main Tyndall Centre website...
