In 2006 the University of Oxford became one of the six core partners for Phase 2 of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, the UK's principal consortium mobilizing climate change science and policy research.
In this joined-up venture between the OUCE's School of Geography and Environmental Change Institute, and with scientists in the Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Planetary Physics department, the Oxford node of the Tyndall centre leads and co-leads two of the seven research themes:
Research Programme 1: Informing International Climate Policy
Leader: Prof. Diana Liverman
Deputy Leader: Dr Mark New
Research Programme 4: Climate Change and Development
Deputy Leader: Prof. David Thomas
The Tyndall Centre brings together scientists, economists, engineers and social scientists, who together are working to develop sustainable responses to climate change through trans-disciplinary research and dialogue on both a national and international level - not just within the research community, but also with business leaders, policy advisors, the media and the public.
Phase 2, running from 2006-2009, has been designed to be relevant to the emerging needs of climate change policy as well as the strategic priorities of three of the UK's Research Councils: the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The research strategy is based around seven Research Programmes.
The Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research comprises six UK research institutions. The other core partners are the Universities of East Anglia, Manchester, Newcastle, Southampton, and Sussex.
